Equipment Scanning How Does it Work

Equipment Scanning: How Does it Work?

By following this checklist, engineers can ensure a systematic and efficient approach to 3D scanning for industrial equipment, resulting in accurate, detailed, and actionable digital representations of the scanned assets.:

  1. Preparation and Selection of 3D Scanning Technology: First, we define the scope of the scanning project and ensure the equipment is clean, free of debris, and positioned in a suitable environment for scanning. Then we choose the appropriate 3D scanning technology based on requirements of the project.

  2. Calibration and the Scanning Process: Next, we calibrate the 3D scanning equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results. Once the scanning process starts, we systematically move the scanner around the equipment to capture valuable data from multiple viewpoints.

  3. Data Processing and Mesh Generation: The raw scan data is then imported into specialized 3D scanning software for processing and alignment. Then, the aligned point cloud is converted into a polygonal mesh representation, where individual points are connected to form a continuous surface.

  4. 3D Model Creation: Depending on the project scope, we would then utilize the scan to create a 3D model of the equipment.

  5. Data Delivery, Integration, Documentation, and Reporting: The last few steps of the process include exporting the finalized 3D model in a suitable file format (e.g. STL, OBJ, or STEP) for use in downstream applications such as CAD, simulation, or visualization. The data is then integrated into relevant workflows or systems. We then document the scanning process, including equipment used, scanning parameters, and any notable observations or challenges encountered.

Benefits of Facility Scans

Benefits of Equipment Scanning

  • Comprehensive Visualization: 3D equipment scanning provides detailed, three-dimensional representations of machinery and infrastructure. This comprehensive visualization offers a clear understanding of equipment layout, spatial relationships, and potential interferences, aiding in precise planning and decision-making.
  • Accurate Measurements: 3D scanning technology captures precise measurements of equipment and surroundings, ensuring accuracy in layout design and retrofitting projects. This level of precision minimizes errors and discrepancies, leading to more efficient and effective implementation of engineering solutions.
  • Efficient Design and Prototyping: With 3D scanning, engineers can quickly generate digital models of existing equipment, enabling rapid prototyping and design iteration. This streamlined process accelerates product development cycles and reduces time-to-market, giving businesses a competitive edge in their respective industries.
  • Remote Accessibility: 3D scanning allows for remote access to equipment data and models, facilitating collaboration among team members, stakeholders, and external partners. This accessibility promotes seamless communication, enhances project coordination, and eliminates geographical barriers in engineering endeavors.
  • Enhanced Documentation and Maintenance: 3D scanning generates comprehensive documentation of equipment configurations, facilitating easier maintenance, repairs, and replacements. This digital record serves as a valuable resource for maintenance personnel, enabling them to efficiently troubleshoot issues and perform preventive maintenance tasks. Additionally, it ensures continuity in operations by preserving critical equipment knowledge for future reference.
  • As-Built Documentation: 3D Scanning equipment packages prior to shipping out provides unique advantages over traditional as-built documentation:
    • Ability to open the scan and orbit the model to view angles that are not normally captured with regular photography.
    • Full 360° panoramic photos.
    • Ability to take measurements of components .
    • Tagging of items to link to equipment manuals and capture equipment data plates.
    • Captures the location of items that may not be shown in design drawings/models as well as capturing items that may have been added/modified during production.
